Garifuna Web sites increasing the importance of news |

Inside the headquaters of Labuga Puerto Barrios Shipping, a heavy discussion is taking place about the current state of the Garifuna in the United States and how should young people take advantage of the available opportunities and resources.
"But it is the technology now a days we must definitely take advantage of", says a Garifuna from the city of Barranco.
These men are getting into the trend of obtaining their news from the many different Garifuna sources that provide news.
"It don't matter if its from Belize, Guatemala or Honduras", continued the man known as "Tamango" locally.
"As long as is about Garifuna, that's what all matters."
Although there are a good number of Garifuna websites now available, the new demand to provide news about the Garifuna is reaching a new height.
"There are young Garinagu who are in college and want to somehow find out how the community is doing", says Inez Cayetano in the Bronx. "I am one of them and I have friends who feel the same way", continued the Garifuna who was on her way to catch the #2 train on Third Avenue in the Bronx.
Emails recieved by Lidani states that the spread of Garifuna news from entertainment to social issues is a way of not just educating Garinagu but also exposing the culture to a medium who have written Garinagu off.
"No one believed that there was such thing as Garifuna news", writes a Garifuna from the Bronx, "until I showed them the links and provided the information on who wrote the piece and where the source came from."
However, despite the fact that the number of Garifuna websites are reaching record numbers, the number of authors or "freelance writers" are still in the lows.
"I think that the way people are doing it is simply dedicating their time to spread news about current events within the community", says Mariano Baltazar in Manhattan.
"What we need now is more than the few who have dedicated their time. How is that going to happen, it will have to be up to the websites to provide incentives in attracting Garifuna writers because they are out there, is just that no one has reached out to them."
