Garifuna Forum 2005 Thank You Letters
Apr 20, 2005
The First Garifuna Community Forum L.A. 2005 was moving, informative, memorable and a complete success. The spirit of Chatuye was with us all. I am currently writing an article about my personal experience at the forum. The article will also summarize the topics of discussions presented by the different guest speakers.

Bilingual Intercultural Education in Classrooms--An Elusive Goal
Mar 04, 2005
For 5 ethnic groups bilingual intercultural education was approved in 1992. In 1994 it became the law for all the indigenous ethnic groups with the ratification of the Convention 169 of the International Labor Organization by the Honduran Congress. In spite of this, for most ethnic groups this project is not in the classrooms.

GARIFUNA ORIGINS PART 1: THE ARAWAK
Feb 17, 2005
According to general history, around 10,000 B.C. a group of nomadic people, from Asia following migrating herds of animals, crossed the ice-capped lands from Siberia to Alaska. The Eskimos, Mayas, Incas and Aztecs are the descendants of these first travelers. Their migration eventually reached down the Amazon River and north into the Orinoco Valley, along the coast of Venezuela and continued through South and Central America. The Garifuna history begins with the Arawaks who are the original inhabitants of Yurumein (St. Vincent) the land of our ancestors.

Is the Garifuna culture dying out?
Jan 20, 2005
I observed that the young people and most of those my age (45+) were not passing on the language and culture. I saw a lot of apathy. I particularly was surprised at a niece of mine whom I asked what was new in the Garifuna community or Organizations. She looked at me like if I was crazy and asked surprisingly ‘what was that?’ My niece, who is twenty-five years old; two young children had no idea of how important it is to stay informed about the culture in order to pass it on to her children. She like many others have taken the culture for granted. They do not realize how rapidly our Garifuna culture is dying out. During my stay, I had the privilege to speak and shared with people on how North Americans and people in the states are very interested in our culture. It was sad that they seemed not to see how special they are as a people.

HIV AND AIDS IN THE GARIFUNA COMMUNITY
Jan 14, 2005
This is a wake up call to all Garinagu concerning the HIV and AIDS epidemic rampant in our community. For years now our culture has been in denial in regards to this disease. We cannot continue to hide from this ever growing problem among our people. HIV and AIDS is currently contributing to the direct decline of the Garifuna population.

ACCEPTING OUR DIFFERENCES
Jan 12, 2005
Sometimes in life we experience some self doubt. We catch ourselves not knowing where we fit in. We find ourselves trying to measure up to other people’s expectations. How do we identify ourselves in society? A number of Garinagu ponder these same questions on a daily basis. They feel that not being able to speak the Garifuna language and not knowing all of the traditions make them less of a Garifuna. I want to reassure you that this is not true.
