Sunday 4/2/00, a meeting took place in the office
of (Mujeres Garifunas en Marcha) MUGAMA, brooklyn branch.
The main purpose of the meeting was to initiate the foundation
of a Garifuna house. You are reading this correct!
a Garifuna house! We all know that as of this moment we, the
Garifuna people, do not own a place on our own, where we can
safely go and ask for help on our personal issues or send
our Garifuna kids to play after school or during the weekend.
According to the information gathered from the meeting, those
are the directions that it is being guided to for this millenium.
According to Mrs. Dionicia Amaya, a member of MUGAMA, "
this is not a MUGAMA only project, but instead a community
project". This clearly points out that the cooperation
of every Garifuna will be needed to make this project a reality.
The house is tentatively scheduled to be ready in about two
years.
The meeting was well attended. Some of the individuals
that attended were, Mr. Felix Miranda, Mr. Hector Vera,
Mr. Nando Arzu and many more. I would just like to
emphasize that this project has been in mind
for quite a while now , but this time around it seems like
it is really going to take off. Demonstration of this
was affirmed by the enthusiasm of every person that attended.
Everyone went home with something to do for the next meeting,
which is scheduled for 5/7/2000. "The meeting
was very productive" commented Mrs. Dionicia Amaya,
with a smile in her face as the meeting came to a closing.
One of the beautiful things about this project is that
it will benefit every Garifuna person and the contribution
you put into into doesn't necessarily have to be monetary.
Every skill is welcomed! whether you are an Architect
or an Electrician or a House Keeper, you will be able to
contribute with as little as some of your time. I
know I will contribute with whatever I can, and you should
too, because if you are Garifuna it is in your blood to
have enough intelligence to achieve any positive goal that
comes to you!
MUGAMA's contact information is coming soon so that you
can receive more information about this wonderful project.
So, do you gari?
