GARIFUNA COUNCIL OF NORTHERN

CALIFORNIA

NEWS LETTER
(NOVEMBER 3 – DECEMBER 31) 2000

About the newsletter editor and staff writers:

Adebisi Akinrimisi, the editor of  The Garifuna Council of Northern California Newsletter, has been active in the community for the past three years. Ms Akinrimisi’s interest in the Garifuna people began in her college years when she attended U.C. Berkeley as an undergraduate student. As a second –generation person, raised by an Afro- Central American mother, she became curious about her Afro-Honduran heritage. Her curiosity into her heritage carried on into her Graduate years at the State University were she decided to do her final thesis project on Garifuna immigrants in the U.S.

One of the reasons Ms. Akinrimisi decided to create this Newsletter, was to bring the Garifuna community closer together in the Bay Area, by keeping them informed about what’s going on in the community. The Garifuna population in northern California has increased in the last two decades. Yet, they are still very isolated from one another. Most Garifuna people in Northern California are spread out over different cities across Northern California and it is difficult for them to locate one another. When Ms. Akinrimisi was growing up in Oakland,Ca, the only Afro-Honduran person’s she knew were her mother and her Grandmother. She and her family lived very isolated from their community. She hopes that the Garifuna community will use this Newsletter as a tool to connect with one-another. She invites Garifuna people of any nationality, via Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala etc. post information about upcoming events going on in the Garifuna community, submit articles, as well as. advertise their businesses in the Newsletter. The Newsletter is one of the ways that the Garifuna people can learn about each other’s experiences and provide support to one another.

Mr.Egbert Higinio a Garifuna originally from Belize, also contributes to the Newsletter as one of the staff writers periodically. Egbert is the President for the Garifuna Council of Northern California, which is stationed in San Jose, California. In the past, Egbert has been very active in Garifuna organizations in Belize, such as the National Garifuna Council located in Dangriga, Belize. Eventually, he would like to return back to his hometown Dangriga, Belize and try to run for Mayor.
