About Martha Guevara & Lazaro Arriola Martha Guevara is a TRADITIONAL HONDURAN Garífuna Singer/Composer; Martha Guevara resides in the Bronx's Little Honduras, and since 1980, receives lyrics and melodies from dreams with ancestors (like traditional healers), and from personal victories and sorrows. She has developed far outside the spotlight for punta rock, the name given to traditional Garífuna musical expressions and contemporary recording technology, which is one of the Bronx's best-kept secrets.
In 1998, Garífuna World Music Productions recognized Martha's work as representing a seminal ancestral influence for modern forms, and awarded her the Best Traditional Recording Artist of 1998. Now she brings her extraordinary talents to fruition with a first CD release which is produced by Mr. Raymond Martinez CEO of Garifuna Enterprises Inc.
"Amadu Diallo" rails against the murder of the young African immigrant, and pleas for an end to the violence; "Nati Vicky" honors an older brother who passed on; and "Diana" addresses the Princess Diana, who she states was "a role model to all women, who didn't deserve to die so young." Accompanying Martha, fellow countryman and musical partner Lázaro, former member of the Honduran National Garífuna Folkloric Ballet of Honduras, one of the premiere African institutions of its kind in the world.
